EU Naval Forces Rescue Sailors Following Somalia Piracy Incident on Vessel
EU maritime units have safely freed 24 sailors from a Maltese-flagged oil tanker that was attacked by pirates off the coast of Somalia.
The Hellas Aphrodite, which was transporting petrol from Indian ports to South Africa, was taken over on Thursday when heavily armed attackers began shooting with machine guns and explosive projectiles before taking control of the vessel.
All sailors secured themselves inside a secure safe room while the attackers assumed command of the ship.
Successful Rescue Operation
A naval vessel, functioning under the EU's anti-piracy mission, reached the tanker on the following day. Special forces entered the craft and found all two dozen sailors safe and sound.
"All personnel is secure and no harm have been documented. During the ordeal, they remained in the citadel in constant communication with command center," officials stated, noting that a "demonstration of power" had prompted the pirates to abandon the vessel before the warship arrived.
Ongoing Threat
Officials added that the danger level in the area "continues to be serious" as the pirates are continue to be in the vicinity.
The mission utilized a aircraft, unmanned aerial vehicle and reconnaissance plane. Shortly before, a different vessel in the identical region was targeted by a small speedboat but successfully avoided it.
Return of Maritime Crime
This incident represents the latest in a series of incidents that have created concern about a renewal of piracy in the region.
Piracy operations had decreased when international naval patrols and security measures were introduced after peaking more than a decade ago.
However, attacks by Yemen's Houthi rebels on vessels in the Arabian Sea, which have been carried out for the past two years, have led ships to be diverted through the African coastline - creating new possibilities for local pirate groups.
Statistical Overview
- Seven reported incidents of piracy took place off the shoreline of Somalia last year
- Several vessel takeovers were documented among these incidents
- A single case of maritime crime was noted in the preceding year
Industry professionals continue to monitor the developments as vessel operators navigate these increasingly dangerous waters.
